In 1991, the Chair of Hematology and Campaign Therapy was set up by Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, university professor Ion Corcimaru. Subsequently, in 1994, it was merged with the Chair of Oncology and, respectively, named the Chair of Hematology and Oncology, still headed by Ion Corcimaru. The professor had been working in the field of hematology since 1963, when he was admitted to the doctoral studies at Moscow Institute of Hematology and Transfusiology. From 1966 until the opening of the Chair, he was the head of the Hematology Unit at the Oncological Institute of the Republic of Moldova.
The year 2013 was marked by special events such as the change of the Chair name to oncology, hematology and radiotherapy and by the appointment of Ion Mereuţă, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, as its head. In 2017, the Chair was reorganized into the Hematology Discipline within the Department of Internal Medicine, Maria Robu, Associate Professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, being appointed head of Discipline.
Currently, within the Hematology Discipline there are 9 collaborators: the head of the Discipline - Associate Professor Maria Robu; consulting professor Ion Corcimaru; 3 university lecturers - Vasile Musteaţă (head of studies), Larisa Musteaţă, Sanda Buruiană; 3 university assistants - Maria Popescu, Natalia Sporîş, Victor Tomacinschii and 1 laboratory assistant - Zinaida Cheptene. Mrs. Aliona Golub, hematologist at the Oncological Institute public health institution is completing her doctoral studies.
The tasks of the Discipline consist in: the undergraduate training of students (faculties of Medicine No. 1 and No. 2, Public Health study program) and postgraduate training through residency and continuing medical education (Department of Continuing Medical Education). Within the Discipline, clinicians of different specialties, as well as those from Laboratory Medicine, can improve their knowledge.
The clinical bases of the Discipline are: the Oncological Institute and National Blood Transfusion Center public health institutions, equipped with modern facilities, which substantially contributes to the quality of training of students, resident doctors and trainees from the Department of Continuing Medical Education. The discipline is located within the Hematology Department of the Oncological Institute public health institution (mun. Chisinau, str. Nicolae Testemitanu, 30).
Scientific investigations, carried out by the Discipline employees, are dedicated to the study of morbidity, clinical peculiarities, and improvement of the methods of malignant lymphomas and chronic myeloid leukemia diagnosis and treatment. The results of scientific investigations have significantly enhanced the effectiveness of treatment, leading to increased survival rates. Scientific data were published in over 475 papers, they formed the background for the development of 37 innovations, 2 inventions, and 6 monographs. 7 PhD theses and one Doctor Habilitated dissertation in medical sciences have been defended.
The employees of the Discipline have participated in various national and international forums (Italy: Rome - 2006/2016; Romania: Bucharest - 2008, Sinaia - 2017/2018, Cluj-Napoca - 2018; Spain: Madrid - 2017; Ukraine: Kiev - 2017; USA: Houston - 2012; Germany: Mannheim - 2015/2018; Russian Federation: Moscow - 2017).
